From the supplier: Canadian author and journalist Jeffrey Simpson noted the ironic fact that Americans have always been uncertain in attitude about the role of government nationally yet so many of their historical heroes and heroines made their contributions in the sphere of government. He pointed out that there is a decided, widespread antipathy toward the US government again in the 1990s. While this antipathy is rooted in the historical, enduring suspicions of government by the American public, several factors have underscored these suspicions. One of these factors is the struggle by the middle class to maintain and raise real family income in the face of increasing taxation. Another is the four great migrations which have profound ramifications for American society overall. Yet for all its twists, turns and excesses, the vibrant vitality of American democracy remains something to behold.
